400% deposit bonus: how the headline is built, and how to pick and clear one

The closest real offers to a 400% deposit bonus are packages that spread matches of 50% to 100% over five deposits, all from casinos licensed outside Great Britain, each stage starting at £20 or €20 with 35x to 40x wagering and the terms published in full. Five such stages can add up to a 400% headline without any deposit being matched above 100%. On five £20 deposits that is £80 of bonus for £100 paid in, or 80p behind every pound.

A 400% deposit bonus promises four pounds of bonus for every pound you pay in. Look closely at almost any 400% banner and you find a sum instead: several matches on several deposits, with the percentages added together. That is the first thing to know, and it changes how you should pick the offer and how you should play it.

So this guide starts with the arithmetic of the headline, moves on to choosing and clearing a multi-stage package (order of play, bet size, where the spins sit, the wagering line on each stage) and leaves the full cost of clearing it until near the end. The welcome bonus hub compares every offshore package if you want the wider view first.

Your fifteen-minute plan: five minutes to add up the stages, five to decide how many stages you would really fund, five to set your limits.

Picking and clearing a 400% offer in six lines

  • Divide the headline by the deposits. With equal deposits, bonus per pound is the headline divided by the number of stages: 400% over five deposits is 80p a pound, less than a plain 100% match.
  • Play every stage deposit-first. With a £30 exit on each £20 deposit, 46.7% of simulated five-stage packages ended above the £100 paid in at 35x; tied together, 40.6%, and 28.6% lost every stage against 9.0%.
  • Fix the number of stages today. One stage deposit-first ended ahead 37.9% of the time; five stages, 46.7%, for £80 more paid in. Extra stages are extra spending, not a better first stage.
  • Bet small. On a 100% stage at 35x, our Classic model cleared 19.9% of the time at 10p and 6.3% at £2. Offshore, nothing but the bonus terms limits your stake.
  • Follow the spins and the base. Count only the spin batches on deposits you will make, and check whether the multiple covers your deposit: on the full package that turns −£32.00 into −£172.00 at 35x.
  • Mind the licence. Casinos at this end sit outside the UK system: Gamstop Online cannot exclude you from them, wagering is not held to 10x, no British body handles complaints, and the terms want documents before any payout.

If a 400% banner has you reaching for your debit card, do the division first. It takes ten seconds and usually settles the question.

Decode a 400% headline before you deposit

Put the terms beside this table and fill in each row. Every figure assumes £20 deposits, the usual minimum.

The first and third rows usually decide the matter. The first tells you what the 400% is worth per pound you deposit; the third tells you whether you can bank a good start on any stage before its bonus locks it in. If the terms answer neither, value the package as five tied-together stages and assume it costs the full £100 to collect.

How 400% headlines are added up

A percentage headline is easy to build from parts. Add the matches on every deposit and you can reach 400% without matching any single deposit at more than 100%. Here are four ways to arrive at the same £80 of bonus with £20 deposits:

Bar chart: a single 400% match would give £4.00 of bonus per £1 deposited; 200% plus two 100% stages give £1.33; four 100% stages give £1.00; five stages of 100%, 100%, 100%, 50% and 50% give 80p.
The same 400% banner can mean anything from four pounds of bonus per pound deposited to less than one, depending only on how many deposits it is spread across.

100% + 100% + 100% + 50% + 50%5£100£8080p

Every row carries the same bonus, so on the value formula they are the same offer: at 35x each needs £2,800 of stakes. What separates them is how much of your own money it takes to collect that bonus, from £20 to £100. The rule of thumb is simple. With equal deposits, the real match per deposit is the headline divided by the number of stages: 400 ÷ 5 = 80% a deposit. A five-stage “400%” is a smaller match than the plain 100% welcome most UK-licensed casinos open with.

Five stages matched at 50% to 100% each can total anywhere from 250% (five at 50%) to 500% (five at 100%), so the same structure can be sold under very different numbers. Read the stage list, not the sum.

Offshore packages and the 400% question

In October 2026 this market ran on licences from Curaçao, Costa Rica or Anjouan rather than a British one, and every offer in it is a deposit welcome package. None of them matches a single deposit at 400%, or at 300%. Here is how their structures relate to a 400% search:

  • Two packages match each of five deposits at between 50% and 100%. Added up, five such stages fall between 250% and 500%, which is the shape most 400% headlines take. Check the full terms for the percentage at each stage.
  • A three-deposit package can add up to 300%. On three £20 deposits that is £60 for £60; the 300% guide plays it stage by stage.
  • One shape opens with a 200% first-deposit match. It puts £40 on your first £20, the most bonus up front anywhere out here.

A package out here needs £20 or €20 a stage, carries 35x to 40x wagering and hands out between 150 and 500 free spins across its deposits. Some terms say spin winnings are paid as cash, somewhere a free bet is added, and the terms ask for documents before the first withdrawal. Some state a 2026 launch. Not one of these casinos holds a Gambling Commission licence or links to Gamstop.

If you will only deposit once

A one-deposit player should ignore the 400% total completely and compare first stages. At this end of the market, a package opening with a 200% match puts £40 on your first £20, with £1,400 to £1,600 to stake at 35x to 40x. The first stage of a five-deposit package brings £10 to £20 on the same £20, with £350 to £800 to stake at 35x to 40x. More bonus up front means a longer line, so the choice is between a bigger bonus and a shorter evening, not between a small number and a big one.

Add up the stages yourself. Write each stage’s percentage and minimum on paper, total them, and divide the total bonus by the total you would pay in. That figure, not the banner, is the size of the offer.

Spend each deposit first, stage after stage

With five stages, the order of play matters five times over. Deposit-first (non-sticky) terms let each £20 play alone and stay withdrawable while it lasts; tied-together (sticky) terms lock it in with that stage’s bonus until the wagering is done.

A five-stage package of 100%, 100%, 100%, 50% and 50% on £20 deposits was simulated at 35x and 40x on our “Classic” model slot, a medium-volatility model returning 96.0%, at 10p a spin, with 50,000 sessions for each stage and every stage drawn independently. The deposit-first player cashes out once a deposit reaches £30 and only plays that stage’s bonus if the deposit runs out.

One stage at a time, the difference is large. A 100% stage at 35x ended above its £20 in 37.9% of deposit-first sessions and 18.1% of tied ones; the first 50% stage, with its shorter £350 line, in 36.8% and 21.5%.

Line chart: playing each deposit first, 37.9% of one-stage plans and 46.7% of five-stage plans ended above the money paid in; tied together, 18.1% and 40.6%.
Extra stages mostly helped the tied-together player catch up; for the deposit-first player each one added £20 of spending for a few points of extra chance.

Across the whole package, deposit-first play ended above the £100 paid in for 46.7% of packages at 35x and 46.0% at 40x. Tied together, 40.6% and 39.0%. The gap narrows as stages are added because each tied stage is one more lottery ticket, but the deposit-first package was far less likely to lose everything: 9.0% against 28.6% at 35x. The typical outcome moved too: the median deposit-first package returned £88.99 of the £100, the median tied package £67.97.

The averages were close, +£22.03 deposit-first and +£24.39 tied, both held up by rare large balances. If leaving with more than you deposited is the goal, or at least keeping most of it, the deposit-first order is the clause to hunt for on every stage.

What 40x changes

Moving every stage from 35x to 40x shaved a little off each result rather than changing the picture. Deposit-first, a single stage still ended ahead 37.4% of the time and the full package 46.0%, with 9.5% losing every stage and a median return of £87.46 on the £100. Tied together, a single stage ended ahead 16.4% of the time and the full package 39.0%, with 33.0% losing everything and a median return of £60.33. The order of play mattered far more than the five extra multiples.

Decide how many stages before you start

A five-stage package is built to bring you back four more times. The table follows the same simulated package for players who stop after each stage, at 35x.

Stages fundedPaid inBonus collectedDeposit first: finished aheadDeposit first: nothing leftDeposit first: typical returnTied: finished ahead

4£80£7044.5%14.4%£74.0238.8%
5£100£8046.7%9.0%£88.9940.6%

Read the deposit-first columns as a planner would. The chance of ending ahead rises only from 37.9% to 46.7% between one stage and five, while the money at stake rises from £20 to £100. The chance of losing every pound falls steeply, because each stage is another try, but the median player still finished below what they paid in at every length of plan.

The order of the stages matters too if you might stop early. With the 100% stages first, two deposits collect £40 of bonus; if the two 50% stages came first, the same two deposits would collect £20, and all three 100% stages would still be waiting in deposits three to five. Read the stage order in the terms before deciding how far you will go.

The honest conclusion: decide the number of stages before the first deposit, from your weekly budget, and never add a stage because the previous one went badly. Funding stage two to recover stage one is chasing losses with a bonus attached.

Keep stakes small on small stages

Each stage of a five-deposit package starts with a modest balance, £40 on a 100% stage and £30 on a 50% stage. A large stake burns through that quickly: a £5 maximum bet covers £40 in 8 spins. Britain’s caps on slot stakes, £5 from age 25 and £2 between 18 and 24, do not reach offshore sites, so the maximum bet in the bonus terms is your only ceiling, and breaking it can, under many sets of terms, cost you the bonus and its winnings.

The 100% match guide tested one such stage, £20 plus £20 at 35x tied together, at five stakes. On our Classic model it cleared 19.9% of the time at 10p and 6.3% at £2; on the low-volatility Steady model, 44.7% and 15.4%. The expected cost of the line was the same at every stake. Small stakes cost time, not money: a 100% stage at 35x is 7,000 spins at 10p, about 4 h 52 min, and a 50% stage is 3,500 spins, about 2 h 26 min.

If the terms let you choose the game, a steadier slot also helps a long line survive. Many terms exclude certain titles or count them at a reduced rate, and nothing in the terms says which games a casino offers, so read the contribution table before settling on one.

Spins spread over five deposits

Spins out here come in packages of 150 to 500, handed out in batches, and a five-deposit package can put a batch on each of its stages. That makes the timing of the spins part of the offer’s real size. If the biggest batch lands on the last stage, it is worth nothing to anyone who stops after one or two.

Value each batch on its own. A batch of 100 spins at 10p is £10 of play, and on a 96% slot it returns £9.60 on average. Across 250,000 simulated sessions on the Classic model, 100 spins at 10p averaged £9.61 when paid as cash, with a median of £6.97. With 35x charged on the winnings, only 6.2% of 20,000 sessions got through and the average fell to £5.66. A 500-spin total at 10p is £50 of play and averages £48.00 before any wagering. Put 35x on those winnings and the formula value falls to −£19.20; at 40x, −£28.80. Paid as cash, the £48.00 average stays yours, which is why a card that pays spin winnings as cash deserves a second look.

100 × £0.10 × 96% = £9.60; with 35x on the winnings: £9.60 × (1 − 35 × 4%) = −£3.84

Three questions for each batch: which deposit unlocks it, what each spin is worth, and whether its winnings are cash or wagered. Add up only the batches tied to deposits you have already decided to make.

The wagering line, stage by stage

Each stage carries its own requirement, and with five of them the small print adds up fast.

The base

Charged on the bonus only, the break-even multiple on a 96% slot is 25x. When the multiple also covers the £20 deposit, a 100% stage breaks even at 12.5x and a 50% stage at about 8.3x. At 35x on deposit plus bonus a 100% stage is worth −£36.00 on paper and a 50% stage −£32.00, so the stages with the least bonus lose almost as much as the biggest ones. No UK-licensed casino could set either, since its multiple may not go beyond ten times the bonus.

Deadlines between stages

Multi-stage packages often set a window for claiming each next stage and a separate window for clearing each bonus. Licensed UK casinos tend to give bonus money anywhere from a few days up to 30 days, while spins usually lapse within a day to a week; an offshore package names its own windows. Put each stage’s clearing time beside its window. A stage you cannot clear in time is a stage to skip.

Caps and contributions

Check whether winnings from bonus play are capped before they turn into cash, since a cap cuts off exactly the big results the averages rely on, and read the contribution table. A game counted at 10% turns a 100% stage’s £700 of wagering into £7,000 of stakes.

The package on a calendar

Five stages are easier to judge as a diary than as a percentage. Here is the 100%, 100%, 100%, 50% and 50% package at 35x on the bonus, stage by stage, with the play each stage needs at 10p and the 2.5-second pace.

All five£100£80£2,80028,00019 h 27 min

Nearly twenty hours of spinning is the length of a part-time job’s week. Few people plan to give a bonus that, which is why most packages are abandoned part-way through and why the stop rules above matter. If you take the package, book the sessions in advance, one stage a week at most, and treat any stage that does not fit the week as cancelled rather than postponed.

A bigger stake shortens the diary but not the bill: at 50p the same line is 5,600 spins and 3 h 53 min, but each session swings harder and a £40 balance lasts far fewer spins. The four 100% stages on the left of the calendar carry most of the hours; the two 50% stages are the cheapest to clear, and also the least worth having.

What clearing it costs

Here is the price of the whole package if every pound of every requirement is staked. The formula is E = B × (1 − W × (1 − RTP)): B is the bonus alone, W is the multiple and RTP is the game’s long-run payback; on a 96% game every pound you stake costs 4p on average.

£80 × 35 = £2,800 staked; £2,800 × 4% = £112; £80 − £112 = −£32.00

The clock runs at 2.5 seconds a spin with no pauses, the fastest pace UK-licensed slots allow. Squeezed into a 7-day window, 35x on the full package is about 2 h 47 min of spinning a day at 10p, or 1 h 23 min at 20p.

A negative formula value is not a forecast that everyone loses. Real sessions usually run out of money before the line is done, so they never pay the full cost, and that is why the simulated averages sit above the formula. What the figure does give you is the price of seeing the package through, and the reason the typical tied-together stage ended with nothing.

Notice one thing the table cannot show. The hypothetical single 400% match on £20 would need the same £2,800 at 35x, but with £20 of your money at risk instead of £100. That gap, not the percentage, is what a five-stage 400% hides.

Price a stage or the whole line

The match calculator opens on a 50% stage, £20 at 40x on the bonus; change the match to 100 for a full stage and switch the base to see the deposit-inclusive version. The cost calculator opens on 14,000 spins at 20p, the 35x line on the full £80 at that stake, and shows the £112.00 it costs on average at 96%.

400% and UK-licensed brands

A 400% match at a UK-licensed casino would be unusual. Licensed welcomes tend to match a modest first deposit at 100%, now and then at 200%, and since 19 January 2026 none may carry wagering above 10 times the bonus. At 10x an £80 bonus on £20 would be worth £48.00 on paper, more than twice the deposit, which is why licensed sites keep percentages modest. The licence also brings identity checks before play, Gamstop, the ban on credit cards since 14 April 2020, the 2.5-second minimum per spin and a prompt to choose a deposit limit.

You cannot stack a group into 400%

One tempting idea is to claim a 100% match four times over, at sister brands, and call it 400%. At most big groups that does not work. Entain’s estate, from the Ladbrokes and Coral shops to Foxy Bingo and Gala Bingo, runs many brands on shared accounts, so one welcome usually covers the group. evoke owns 888 Casino, 777 Casino, 888sport and, since 2022, William Hill, so check the group rule there too. Kindred’s casino-first 32Red sits beside Unibet, a sportsbook with a casino attached. Since 19 January 2026 no licensed promotion may make you combine a bet with casino play either, so a betting brand cannot unlock a bigger casino percentage through a sports stake.

Big numbers, read correctly

On the Bally’s platform, Rainbow Riches Casino, Double Bubble Bingo and Monopoly Casino tend to describe welcomes by the balance a £10 deposit produces. Translated, a 400% match on £10 would read “play with £50”, and £40 of that would be bonus. At Dream Jackpot and Amazon Slots, Jumpman Gaming sites, the first-deposit welcome is a prize-wheel spin whose headline figure is the best prize on the wheel. PlayOJO and MrQ go the other way: they are known for bonuses with no wagering at all, so there is no line to clear.

bet365, privately owned in Stoke-on-Trent, keeps its casino second to sport and builds casino welcomes on deposits as a rule, and Betway runs sport and casino under one name with deposit-based welcomes. LeoVegas, an MGM Resorts group designed for mobile, carries BetMGM’s British site on its licence and platform. Grosvenor Casinos, Genting Casino and Admiral Casino all have premises in Britain, the opposite profile to a new site leading with a 400% banner.

What an offshore 400% package lacks

Percentages that add up to 300% or more usually come from casinos licensed outside Great Britain, and that is true of every one of them. Five stages there mean five deposits outside every UK safeguard: no self-exclusion through Gamstop, no 10x ceiling, no ID check before play, nobody prompting a deposit limit, no £5 and £2 stake caps, no minimum spin time and no British complaints route. An operator that serves British players with no Commission licence is the one breaking the law. You are not, but you also have no British body to hear you if a withdrawal is refused after stage five.

Elsewhere offshore the pattern repeats. Goldenbet and Mystake are among the five Curaçao sites owned by Santeda International B.V., which means one foreign company to pursue in a dispute; none of them appears on the UK register or takes part in Gamstop, and nothing caps their wagering. Rainbet, run by RBGAMING N.V. under an Anjouan licence, is crypto-first. NineWin and Kinghills are new Curaçao sites with no public history, promoted in Britain on “not on GamStop” pages. Gamdom and Roobet are Curaçao crypto casinos, and coins sent to them carry no bank protection. None of them holds a British licence, so the safeguards missing from an offshore licence are absent at each of these too.

If you have joined Gamstop, a five-deposit offshore package is the opposite of what you signed up for. GamCare offers free, confidential support, and GamBan can block gambling sites on your devices.

Red flags in a 400% headline

  • A total with no stage list. If you cannot see each stage’s percentage and minimum, you cannot divide the headline by the deposits.
  • Minimums that rise stage by stage. A package that starts at £20 and asks for more later costs more than its first stage suggests.
  • Deposits plus bonus. On the full package it moves 35x from −£32.00 to −£172.00 on paper.
  • The best spins on the last stage. A batch held back for deposit five is there to bring you back four times.
  • Back-to-back deadlines. Stages that must follow within days are built for speed, not for your budget.
  • Crypto pushed at the cashier. A strong sign of an unlicensed site, and a payment with no bank protection behind it.

Stop a five-stage package becoming a habit

Five deposits spaced over days or weeks look like a routine, and routines are hard to notice. Three planner’s rules keep it a one-off.

  1. Write the plan down on day one. Number of stages, total deposit, hours. If any stage would break the plan, it is not part of it.
  2. Separate the stages from your losses. Never fund the next stage on a day the last one went badly. That is chasing, whatever the banner calls it.
  3. Use every brake available. Licensed sites have to ask you to set a deposit limit and must let you take a time-out. Offshore sites might do neither, so set your own limit before stage one and keep it on paper.

Blocking tools and free support are listed on the safer gambling page. If what drew you here was a giant spin count rather than a percentage, the 1000 free spins guide shows how those headlines are assembled the same way, and the best casino bonus guide puts every bonus type on one formula.

Behind the numbers

Our “Classic” model slot is a model, not a real game. It returns 96.0%, sits in the medium-volatility class, pays something on 25.8% of spins and triggers its feature every 160 spins on average, with a top prize of 3,000x the stake. The stake comparison quoted from the 100% guide also used the low-volatility “Steady” model, which returns 96.2%. No figure here is a real casino’s.

The package is five stages on £20 deposits matched 100%, 100%, 100%, 50% and 50%, each simulated over 50,000 sessions at 10p and drawn independently. In tied runs, each stage’s deposit and bonus share a single balance, spun until the requirement is met or the money cannot pay for one more spin. In deposit-first runs each £20 is spun by itself and withdrawn on reaching £30; a deposit that runs dry hands over to its bonus, which then has to clear its whole requirement from scratch. A plan of k stages adds up the first k stages. The spin figures come from the hub’s runs: 250,000 cash sessions of 100 spins at 10p, and 20,000 sessions with 35x on the winnings, wagered at 10p.

On paper, every value is B × (1 − W × (1 − RTP)) at a 96% RTP; deposits never count as bonus, though they join the stakes when the base includes them. Every clearing time uses a pace of 2.5 seconds a spin and no pauses. The UK rules and their dates are as published by the Gambling Commission, and the offshore packages appear as they stood in October 2026; each casino’s own terms take priority.

400% bonus questions

Where can I find a 400% deposit bonus?

No single deposit anywhere in this market is matched at 400%. The closest real offers are five-deposit packages with stage matches from 50% to 100%, which can add up to a 400%-style total, alongside a package totalling 300% across three deposits and one opening with a 200% match. Those casinos hold offshore licences; each needs £20 or €20 a stage and carries 35x to 40x, as its terms show.

How is a 400% headline usually built?

By adding the matches on several deposits, for example 100%, 100%, 100%, 50% and 50% on five deposits. With equal deposits, divide the headline by the number of stages to find the real match per deposit: 400% over five is 80%.

Is a five-stage 400% package better than a 100% match?

Per pound deposited, no. Five £20 stages adding to 400% bring £80 of bonus for £100, or 80p a pound, while a 100% match brings £1 a pound. The package simply spreads a smaller match over more deposits.

How should I play a multi-stage 400% package?

Deposit-first on every stage where the terms allow, with a fixed exit, small stakes and a number of stages decided in advance. Played that way in simulation, 46.7% of five-stage packages ended above the £100 paid in at 35x, and 9.0% lost every stage.

Should I fund all five stages?

Only if all five deposits fit your budget anyway. Deposit-first, one stage ended ahead 37.9% of the time and five stages 46.7%, but five stages mean £100 paid in instead of £20, and the median player finished below what they paid at every length of plan.

What does clearing £80 of bonus cost?

At 35x on the bonus, £2,800 of stakes and an expected cost of £112 at 96% RTP, leaving −£32.00 on paper, or about 9 h 43 min at 20p. At 40x it is £3,200 of stakes and −£48.00.

What if the multiple covers my deposits too?

Then 35x applies to £180 rather than £80: £6,300 of stakes and a formula value of −£172.00, or −£208.00 at 40x. A 50% stage charged that way breaks even at about 8.3x.

Can I make 400% by claiming welcomes at sister brands?

Usually not. Large UK-licensed groups often allow one welcome per person across all their brands, because many of those brands share accounts. Check the group rule before you open a second account.

Do UK-licensed casinos offer 400% matches?

Rarely. Their welcomes normally match a small first deposit at 100%, occasionally at 200%, and since 19 January 2026 wagering cannot exceed 10 times the bonus. At 10x an £80 bonus would be worth £48.00 on paper.

Are the casinos with these packages covered by Gamstop?

No. Every one of these casinos holds an offshore licence: Gamstop cannot block them, the 10x ceiling does not bind them and no British complaints body can rule on them.
